Teeth grinding affects around 10% of people, but you don’t have to suffer

If you wake up in the mornings with a headache, have pain in your jaw when eating or talking, or find you clench your teeth during the day, you may be grinding or clenching your teeth during the night.

Bruxism (parafunction) or Teeth Grinding as it is more commonly known, is a subconscious habit where people put pressure on their teeth while they sleep at night. Over time, this can cause damage to your teeth and jaw and cause pain. It can be more noticeable when you are stressed. Bruxism is most common in those aged 25-44 but it can affect people of all ages, including children. The good news is that there are effective treatments to prevent teeth grinding and resolve any damage to your teeth and jaw.

The symptoms of teeth grinding

Bruxism affects everyone differently but below are the most common symptoms you might experience.

  • Headaches
  • Earache
  • Facial pain
  • Jaw pain, also known as TMJ dysfunction
  • Damaged or worn-down teeth
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Broken teeth or broken fillings in severe cases

However, dental symptoms are not the only impact on your overall health; if you suffer from sleep-related bruxism, this may disturb your sleep and can even wake you completely.

What’s involved in the treatment process?

The first step is to have a consultation where Dr Preeyan Patel will take your full medical history and discuss the symptoms you are experiencing. A treatment plan will then be devised. Although there is no cure for clenching or grinding your teeth, the use of an occlusal splint (a custom-made mouthguard), which you wear whilst you are asleep, can reduce further damage by creating a barrier between your teeth to prevent you from clenching them together. This helps prevent any further damage and can reduce pain.

The splint can take a little while to get used to, but most people find it works very well, reducing muscle tension. Some even say that they can’t sleep without it!

Splints are made of a hard acrylic (which is softer than enamel and dentine) so, if you continue to grind whilst wearing the splint, you will damage the splint and not your teeth!
