Effective treatments for damaged and worn teeth

‘Tooth wear’ is the deterioration of your teeth, usually diagnosed by your dentist (which is why it is important you go for regular check-ups). There may be discolouration of the teeth or changes in shape and size. Becoming sensitive to hot and cold food and drink can also be an indication of tooth wear.

Grinding/clenching your teeth, drinking fizzy drinks and acid reflux can also contribute to the wear and tear of your teeth, causing unsightly damage and discomfort.

In cases where damage and wear to teeth is extensive, specialist treatment is often required to improve the appearance of your teeth and prevent further damage.

What’s involved in the treatment process?

There are several reasons why your teeth can wear. Identifying the cause can be challenging due to the complex nature and gradual progression over time, however, this is an important part of the consultation process to treat not just the symptoms of tooth wear but also the causes.

There are four main steps to managing tooth wear:

1. Diagnose

2. Prevent and protect

3. Restorative care (if needed)

4. Monitor and maintain

Active prevention and monitoring, composite bonding, adhesive crowns and conventional crowns are all things that we can consider depending on your circumstances. Where possible, we use non-invasive treatment but for more advanced cases, restoring and protecting the tooth is our main priority. The main aim is to restore function, reduce pain and improve appearance. We always work closely with you to ensure you are happy with the treatment process and outcomes.
